MARGAO, APRIL 6
Asserting that the ongoing political developments is certainly bad for the state of Goa, senior Congress leaders Ravi Naik and Francisco Sardinha have called upon the Chief Minister Digambar Kamat to assert himself and deal the political situation with a firm hand.
Questioning the formation of G-7 within the ruling coalition, Naik said the NCP was the partner which had a pre-poll alliance with the Congress and said the high commands of both the NCP and the Congress should resolve all issues affecting the coalition government. “We only had an alliance with the NCP. Then, we received the support of Vishwajeet Rane, Babush Monseratte and the two MGP MLAs. I fail to understand what this G-7 is all about”, he said.
Saying that the government is stable and nothing would happen to the Kamat-led dispensation, Naik, however, said the people of the state have not appreciated the constant instability to the government.
When newsmen asked Naik how and who should resolve the situation, the Home Minister reminded that the Chief Minister if the leader of the government and that Kamat should take a decision in consultation with the party high command.
When asked to react to the demand to strip him of the Home portfolio, Naik retorted that portfolio allocation is the prerogative of the Chief Minister and the Congress high command.
He replied in the negative when newsmen suggested whether Kamat has failed to act tough and overcome the situation, but hastened to add that the Chief Minister has to act with a firm hand in consultation with the high command. “The Chief Minister has to be firm. We all are with him”, he said, but did not outline what action he would like the Chief Minister to initiate to resolve the political crisis dogging the government.
Meanwhile, South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha echoed similar sentiments saying that he has told the Chief Minister to be firm in tackling the political imbroglio.
He said the political instability will make the government weak and also bring a bad name for the state of Goa. “I don’t like what is happening in the state. With all this political development, the government becomes weak. In addition, it brings a bad name for the state and its people”, he added.
Saying that he has conveyed to the Chief Minister to act firmly to resolve the political imbroglio, Sardinha recalled that he had been saying this from the very beginning.
