Smart city authorities began the works of reconstruction of the drains near Jama Masjid in Panjim on Wednesday to make sure that drains are not flooded due to heavy rains. In recent years, the city has been witnessing unseasonal rainfall leading to flooding and chaos. To combat this issue, the smart city authorities have taken a proactive step towards reconstructing the drains near Jama Masjid, one of the most iconic landmarks in Panjim.

This decision comes after the unfortunate incident that occurred on 20th April 2024, when unseasonal torrential rains lashed the city. The heavy downpour caused water to enter into shops and houses, leaving the Panjim locals distressed and helpless. The inadequate drainage system was unable to handle the heavy influx of rainwater, resulting in chaos and property damage.

To avoid such a situation from recurring, the smart city authorities have begun the reconstruction of the drains near Jama Masjid in Panjim. The primary objective of this project is to ensure that the drains are deep enough to handle heavy rains and prevent flooding in the city. The drains will be constructed deeper than the road level, allowing them to accumulate rainwater without spilling onto the streets and entering properties.

This initiative by the smart city authorities is due to the negligence of the authorities as the drainage system was newly built in Panjim. Just before the unseasonal rain shower in the city, the drainage was newly constructed by the smart city officials and yet it could not sustain one rain. Hence the authorities are reconstructing the drains again in the city. Constructing drains is a crucial step toward creating a well-planned and efficient drainage system that can withstand heavy rainfall and minimize the risk of flooding.

Moreover, this project is a part of the larger vision of creating a smart city that incorporates advanced technology and innovative solutions to enhance the quality of life for its residents. With a reliable drainage system in place, the risk of damage to businesses and properties during heavy rains will be significantly reduced. This, in turn, will boost the confidence of entrepreneurs and investors in Panjim, leading to the growth and development of the city.
