Students of DMC College, Assagao along with NSUI Goa confronted the college principal on Thursday for not allowing some first-year students to answer their examination due to low attendance. The issue came to light when the principal allowed a few students with low attendance to answer their exams while debarring around 88 students who also had low attendance. NSUI Goa met the principal and the principal gave an assurance that he would send the reports to Goa University so that they could make the final decision.

NSUI Goa President Naushad Choudhary said, “As per our education system, 75% attendance is mandatory in all educational institutions. In some cases, students fall sick or participate in sports due to which they are unable to fulfil the requirement of 75%. Students who were absent or have low attendance due to genuine reasons are debarred from answering their exams. Due to the lack of 0.5% that is needed to complete the 75% of attendance, the students have to repeat their whole year all over again. So we came here to  meet the college principal and requested to consider the students who had genuine issues and allow them to answer the exams.”

The college management did not consider the student's illness, family emergencies off, sports participation, and other co-curricular participation which dropped their attendance low. One of the first-year students spoke about the issue saying that he was debarred despite giving a justification letter. “My grandmother had expired recently and I had informed my sir about the news. When I began attending my lectures in college, sir told me to submit a justification letter. The very next day I submitted the justification letter along with my grandmother’s death certificate. Sir replied saying that he would process my justification. Despite the justification being genuine, I was debarred from answering my exams,”  said a first-year student.

“This is not something new there is a provision in the statute that if something happens that restricts the student from attending college, then an enclosure of a medical certificate is needed. Here the principal is not ready to accept the letters. He keeps on delaying the approval. Somewhere the students felt that he didn’t want the students to answer their exams,” said Naushad.

After hearing the plea of NSUI and the college students, the principal stated that he would send the list of the students to Goa University and the Vice chancellor and the registrar would make an appropriate decision.
