Deputy Director of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Program, Dr. Kalpana Mahatme, has reported a significant spike in vector-borne cases in 2024 compared to the previous year. The year 2024 has seen a rise of 77 cases, contrasting with the 24 cases reported between January and March 2023.

The primary cause of this surge has been mosquito breeding in water stored in quarters for migrant workers. Dr. Mahatme, along with health officials, underscores the urgent need for proactive measures to prevent water accumulation in and around households. Dengue cases have been reported in various areas, notably in settlements of migrant laborers and construction workers where water is stored due to scarcity.

Despite dengue occurrences typically being less common during summer, this year has seen an unusual prevalence, necessitating concerted efforts to combat the spread. Dr. Mahatme advocates for regularly removing stagnant water from potential breeding grounds every seven days to curb the dengue threat.

Efforts to combat dengue include awareness workshops, competitions, and collaborative initiatives with local authorities, such as collecting garbage and releasing guppy fish in water sources. Dr. Mahatme emphasizes the importance of community engagement and sustained efforts in mitigating the dengue menace.
