Bardez Veterans book semi-final berth
BENAULIM: Bardez Veterans registered an emphatic 3-0 victory over Monte Benaulim Veterans to enter the semi-finals of the 18th V M Salgaocar Memorial Veterans soccer tournament organised by Prime Sports Club, at St John the Baptist Ground, Dando-Benaulim, on Sunday.
Bardez Veterans made a fantastic start and surged ahead in the 3rd minute when winger Domnic Braganza sent in a low cross from the left to Sailesh Misqin who struck a right footer which went past the Benaulim goalkeeper Costao Silva.
Down by an early goal, Benaulim regrouped and should have got the equaliser in the 12th minute when striker Milar Lucio’s left footer was pushed away by a diving effort made by the Bardez goalkeeper Lino Travasso.
Benaulim were in control of the match however the defence conceded a soft goal in the 22nd minute when Bardez midfielder Atul Naik was fouled on the edge of the box which gave an opportunity for Bruno Coutinho who struck a fierce free-kick which went out of the grasp of the Benaulim goalkeeper Coatao Silva and the rebound was quickly shot in by Melwin Rodrigues.
After the breather, it was Bardez which took a firm grip of the proceedings and striker Shailesh Misqin netted his brace by placing the ball beyond the reach of rival goalkeeper Costao Silva.
Earlier the chief guest Leslie Dourado, ex-Sarpanch Seraulim was introduced to the players by Jerone Fernandes and Francis Fernandes.
