CHINCHINIM: Chandor SC defeated SWC Zaino 5-3 via the tie breaker to clinch the 20th Our Lady of Merces Cup in the final of the eight-a-side inter-village football tournament, organised by Sirlim Sports Club at Church ground, Chinchinim on Tuesday.

SWC Zaino with a forceful start with striker Samson Simoes entered the danger zone twice but his finishing was wasteful. Chandor’s Louie Noronha took control of the ball from Benson Fernandes and shot from the top of the Zaino box but the rival keeper saved it brilliantly.

Zaino’s Jade Colaco header missed the Chandor nets. The lad was denied once again by brilliant keeping from Johnson Fernandes in the 29th minute.

In the second half Samson Simoes netted the first goal of the final in the 31st minute for Zaino.

In the 55th minute Darren Fernandes equalised for Chandor.

Thereafter both the teams played cautiously and the winner had to be decided in the tie breaker in which Chandor netted through Darren Fernandes, Mahesh Gaonkar, Benson Fernandes and Flezer Gomes and for SWC Zaino Samson Simoes and Micheal Silva scored.

Chandor were richer by Rs 40,000 and a trophy while SWC Zaino had to be content with Rs 35,000 and a trophy.
