FATORDA: Tuesday night was a historical moment for Iran as they beat two-time champions Mexico at Fatorda Stadium.  The Central Americans were put to sword by yet another defensive brilliance from the Coach Abbas Chamanian’s colts.  However, it was all about Mexico’s jersey no 19 — Diego Lainez.

Be its pace, trickery, blistering runs, supplying deliveries, in right position at right moment — name it and the number 19 had it all. Little did the Goans know or learnt about the midfielder prior to this match at Fatorda.

Lainez’s quick feet and dribbling skills tormented the Iran defence and also worried the opposition coach for the entire match. He dazzled for Mexico putting up an impressive performance that earned him praises from the fans, players and even from the opposition coach.

“Mexico had a good attacking team. Especially their No 19 (Diego Lainez) was brilliant. He was a threat to us,” exclaimed Iran Coach making a special mention of the Mexican youngster who recently made to his club’s (Club America) senior team.

Diego Lainez had two goals to his name in the tournament which he scored against England in their Group F opening clash. Despite losing out on the quarterfinal spot, the youngster was happy with the ‘comments’ he received from opposition side and people.

“It’s an honour for me as one of the opposition technical team member said all these words. I will prepare better next time. It’s very proud moment to get such good praises from the people. I will meet people’s expectations,” said Diego Lainez.

Mexico coach Mario Arteaga called him a ‘unique player’ having distinct qualities and said, “He (Lainez) is quite an unique player. He is explosive on the field and very fast. His contribution is immense and surely he will make it big.”

Diego, who recently made it into the first team squad for his side Club America said the opportunity hands him a chance to play with the experienced and grow.

Lainez had Iran breathe uneasily with his skill and movement producing one of the best displays of the tournament and laid a fight back along with his teammates but they failed to win. Already catching the eye of the football fraternity, Lainez feels that his dedication and hard work will take him to greater heights. “My fight against my dreams is the only way forward in his life,” Lainez concluded.
