Former Goa’s star Leopoldo passes away

PANJIM: Goa’s veteran footballer Leopoldo Fernandes passed away after prolonged illness on Wednesday. Leopold was an outstanding midfielder and played for Don Bosco Oratory in the First Division league which helped him earn a spot at Dempo SC in 1974. He dealth with his opponents calmly and effectively.

PANJIM: Goa’s veteran footballer Leopoldo Fernandes passed away after prolonged illness on Wednesday. Leopold was an outstanding midfielder and played for Don Bosco Oratory in the First Division league which helped him earn a spot at Dempo SC in 1974. He dealth with his opponents calmly and effectively. 

Leopoldo was a member of the Dempo which won the Rivers Cup in Mumbai in 1975. 

Goa Football Association in a statement said, “We condole the sad and untimely demise of Leopoldo, he has contributed a lot towards goan football, both as a player and a manager. Leopoldo will be remembered for his leadership qualities as he led Salgaocar FC to many victories during his time. GFA prays for comfort to his bereaved family heartfelt sympathies.”

Meanwhile, Churchill Alemao, President of Churchill Brothers FC condoled the death of Leopold. "He was a dynamic midfielder who impressed with his neat interceptions and smart passes. His style was elegant and he was a highly disciplined player. Off the field he was a gentleman to the core with an amiable disposition and was always a helpful hand to those in need," stated Churchill in a condolence message.

President of Salgaocar FC Shivanand Salgaocar said, “He was a towering midfielder who later moved effortlessly into the central defender position. Was a great team player and subsequently took over as the manger of our team. He maintained very cordial relationship with GFA as well AIFF.  His passing away is a big loss for our club. May his soul rest in peace.”  

Leopoldo ended his career at Salgaocar SC.

Meanwhile, the U-14 match between Salgaocar FC and Cortalim Gymkhana, on Chicalim ground, on Wednesday was postponed as a sign of respect for Leopoldo.
