Fr Agnel College emerge zonals winners

PUNE: Fr Agnel College of Commerce and Arts, Pilar kept Goa’s flag flying high in the Reliance Foundation Youth Sports; West Zone football championship by winning the college boys category, at the DSK Football Field, on Friday.

The Fr Agnel boys signed off the league in style with a thumping 6-3 victory over Pune’s Spicer Adventist University to top the college boys standings with an unbeaten record. The winners now head for the National Championship to be played in Mumbai later this month.

Ronil Azavedo and the prolific Chandan Gavas led the goal charge for the winners scoring a hat-trick and a brace respectively. Striker Ganesh Thakur, who scored in the 66th minute, and played a key role with his assists was adjudged Player-of the Match.

The first half witnessed a flurry of goals as Fr Agnel raced to a 3-0 lead by the 32nd minute. But Spicer hit back with two goals within a span of eight minutes through Zikbung Kamsuam  and H.A.S Masotngam. A thriller was on cards as the teams headed into half-time with the Goan team having a slender 3-2 advantage.

Post resumption, the lads from Fr Agnel didn’t take their foot off the gas  and left the opposition way behind as they netted three more goals while Spicer could only respond with Rosangliana Ralte in the 71st minute.
