GFA aims to boost women football in State

PANJIM: After the success of the ongoing Women’s League, GFA now aims to take women’s football to the next level, by encouraging inter-village and age group tournaments for women.

PANJIM: After the success of the ongoing Women’s League, GFA now aims to take women’s football to the next level, by encouraging inter-village and age group tournaments for women.

GFA president Elvis Gomes said that the time has come for people to realise that women’s football has a better future if the right kind of support is given and expressed satisfaction that the league with six teams brought out talent which needs to be nurtured. 

“It was a dream to trigger development of women’s football. Today it is fulfilled,” said Gomes at the conclusion of the second semi-final, which saw SCC Cavelossim SOWS and Panjim Dolphins sail into the final to be held on December 17.

He went on to add that the success of the league has generated  so much interest, that the league can be an attraction for out station female players to play in the local teams in the near future.

Gomes said that the enthusiasm among the girls was high and it is a bigger challenge for them to nurture the talent seen in the league and also to keep the players form intact. “I will encourage our member clubs to hold tournaments for girls on the lines of inter-village tournaments. Age group competition and a GFA Super Cup will be introduced in the next season,” said Gomes.

Appealing to corporate to support women’s football Gomes said that it would be a true tribute to ‘girl power’ which will keep the momentum going and will result in getting good players for the State and Country.
