Goan clubs should have been united: Gomes

Considering the exit of the Goan clubs from the I-League, the Goa Football Association (GFA) President Elvis Gomes blamed the AIFF’s ‘inconsistent policies’.

“If Goan clubs have exited the I-League, it is because of the inconsistent policies followed by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).”

“There has been no end to experimentation. Our age old clubs got a raw deal. But they had read it all between the lines that the federation had different ideas notwithstanding the claims of the AIFF President and his secretary that I-League would continue to be the main league which was furthest from the truth.” Lamented Elvis stating that the bodies real intention was to place Indian Super League (ISL) above everything.

It can be recollected that Churchill Brothers FC were kept out of the league for not meeting the league standards and were fighting a legal battle against the federation for long

The State football head said that the GFA had rallied behind Churchill Bros all along.

“At a time when the three others opted out, Churchill Bros and Federation not surprisingly came to a compromise and the Varca based club was allowed a direct entry,” alleged Elvis.

“Goan clubs should have been united and made the federation listen to them. Our crab mentality is visible everywhere including in football,” expressed Elvis.

Despite all odds, the GFA seems not perturbed by the developments and revealed of having a longer Goa Professional league stretched over a period of eight months.

“Sometimes such things are a blessing. Our football is robust. We are runners up in the senior nationals. We can focus on our leagues better and there is a huge scope to improve our own football and be a force to reckon with. This year we propose to have a longer pro league spreading over eight months,” he concluded.
