Hat-trick hero Welson fires Curtorim Gymkhana into quarter-finals
BENAULIM: Welson Fernandes struck a fine hat-trick as Curtorim Gymkhana cruise past Carmona SC to enter the quarter-finals of the 33rd Strikers Trophy Football Tournament organised by Young Strikers Benaulim, at St John Baptist Ground Dando-Benaulim, on Tuesday.
Curtorim made a blistering start but the young Carmona goalkeeper Edwil Afonso made two fantastic saves in the first quarter denying Nelson Fernandes and Mackwill Fernandes from putting their team ahead.
Curtorim finally broke the deadlock in the 27th minute when striker Welson Fernandes finished a move initiated by medio Abel Noronha with a right footed drive.
Carmona fought back and restored parity five minutes later when Curtorim goalkeeper Cristo Hilario committed an error by allowing the ball to slip out of his hands following a low free-kick by Cristben Estebeiro. The joy was short-lived for Carmona as Welson Fernandes restored Curtorim's lead with a fierce volley from a pass by winger Veron Fernandes from the right.
After the change of end, Curtorim dominated the proceedings and Welson Fernandes completed his hat-trick in the 62nd minute with a deft placement off a pass made by Mackwill Fernandes
