Velaine strikes for Goan FC

Team Herald

MAPUSA: Velaine Fernandes’ 6th minute strike enabled Goan Football Club to register a solitary goal win over Goa Velha Sports Club in the GFA Vedanta Women’s League organised by GFA,  at Duler Stadium, here, on Sunday.

With Sunday’s win, Goan FC has six points while Goa Velha SC are yet to open their account after playing their second league match.

Hardly had the teams settled Junior International Goan FC’s Velaine Fernandes got hold of a pass from Alisha Tavares who intelligently chipped the ball over the Goa Velha keeper Rhea Noronha to give her side the lead.

Four minutes later, Goa Velha had the opportunity to level terms when Amisha Endro snatched the ball from Goan defender Rhea Pires and sent a curling shot at the goal which missed the target narrowly.

At the other end in the 15th minute, Goan FC would have extended their lead when Jeromina Colaco sent a square pass to Joyvi Fernandes whose shot at the goal was brilliantly saved by the Goa Velha keeper Rhea Noronha.

Goa Velha’s striker Mabel Mascarenhas had to leave the field and was replaced by Tercy Pinto due to injury in the 30th minute.

On resumption of play, the Goan FC eves had better ball possession and attempts at the rival goal but their strikers failed to beat the rival keeper time and again.

In the 47th minute, a superb free-kick from Velaine Fernandes saw Alisha Tavares a bit late to beat the onrushing Goa Velha keeper Rhea Noronha.

As the match progressed, Alisha’s and Vailanka D’Souza’s goal bound efforts were saved by keeper Rhea.

The player-of-the-match was rightly awarded to Goan FC’s Vailanka D’Souza.

Meanwhile at Ambelim ground, Churchill Brothers SC and Sporting Clube de Goa played a 1-1 draw.
