Fluent victory for Salgaocar Veterans

MARGAO, APRIL 7 Salgaocar Veterans trounced Ponda Veterans 5-0 to storm into the semi-finals of All- India invitational veterans football tournament organized by Veterans of Salcete at Curtorim ground, on Wednesday. Salgaocar Veterans led 2-0 at half time.

Salgaocar Veterans  trounced  Ponda Veterans  5-0 to storm into the semi-finals of All- India invitational veterans football tournament organized by Veterans of Salcete at Curtorim ground, on Wednesday. Salgaocar Veterans led 2-0 at half time.
Salgaocar Veterans  had an edge over their rivals in all the department of the game  and they displayed  it by scoring goals at regular intervals. Former international Mario Soares  and Alfred Fernandes played a stellar role.
Camilo Baptista put Salgaocar Veterans in front when Alfred Fernandes was brought down by Ponda Veterans outside the rival box. Off  the resultant  free kick Domingos Vaz beat the rival goalkeeper all ends up. Striker Domingos Vaz doubled the lead midway in the opening session off a pass from Alfred Fernandes.
After changer of ends, it turned out to be  a one-sided affair with Salgaocar Veterans  all over the rival territory. Striker Domingos Vaz struck the second time after he was fed by Alfred Fernandes.
Midway in the second half, playmaker Mario Soares was on target  to ensure  Salgaocar Veterans  had a health 4-0 lead  Jerry Fernandes drove the last nail into Ponda Veterans coffin in the dying minutes off a pass from Mario Soares.
Earlier Kolhapur  Veterans  were lucky  to enter the semi-finals defeating Curtorim Veteran 9-8  via the sudden death. After a goalless draw  in the normal period, the tie breaker also failed to resolve the deadlock and the issue was decided via the sudden death.
