MARGAO: Taking serious note of the issue of stagnant sewage in the Comba underpass highlighted in the Herald, NGO GOACAN urged the authorities to implement precautionary measures to avoid health and public safety implications for the people of Margao.

In a letter to the South Goa Deputy Collector, GOACAN said that the stench and filth from the waterlogged subway was sure to affect the health of motorists who use it, and local residents as well.
“The underpass is in the vicinity of various schools, higher secondary schools and colleges and the water logging will definitely have an impact on the students and faculty members,” said Roland Martins, Coordinator, GOACAN. “GOACAN therefore urges the authorities to seek a report from various agencies like Public Works Department, Urban Health Centre-Margao, Transport, sewerage department, fire and emergency services, Konkan Railway Corporation, traffic police and Margao Municipal Council on the cause of the problem, impact and the proposed solution,” he said. He also informed Herald that the meeting of the South Goa District Road Safety Committee is scheduled on February 3, and this matter will be raised as an agenda item.
Copies of the GOACAN letter have been sent to the South Goa Collector, DySp Traffic , Dy Director Transport, Dy Director (Fire) South Zone, Health Officer UHC Margao, Chief Officer Margao Municipal Council, PWD Principal Chief Engineer and Assistant Director Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs.
