PONDA: Over the past year, Ponda taluka has witnessed underground power cabling works across various villages and town areas. While this infrastructure upgrade is crucial for the taluka’s development, locals have voiced concerns about the state of roadside gutters, which have become filled with mud and pose hardships to road-users, particularly during the upcoming monsoon season.
The excavation work associated with laying underground power cables has resulted in trenches being dug along roadsides. While some main roads have been restored, many internal village roads remain in disrepair, with trenches yet to be refilled and roads not restored to their original condition.

The accumulation of excavated mud in roadside gutters has raised alarm among residents, as it poses a risk of obstructing rainwater drainage during the monsoon. Naresh Naik, a concerned resident, emphasised the importance of clearing mud from gutters and restoring roads before the onset of the rainy season. He called on authorities, including Panchayat bodies, to ensure that contractors fulfill their obligations to avoid inconvenience to students and pedestrians.
Additionally, residents of Dhavalim have raised complaints about dust pollution resulting from the ongoing works. They have urged authorities to take measures to mitigate dust by spreading water on roadsides to settle loose mud, and spare them from health risks.
