PERNEM: Garbage littered by the roadside in Pernem Taluka is going unattended as the local authorities are busy collecting only dry garbage. Except for the three panchayats, namely Morjim, Mandrem and Arambol, all the other 17 village panchayats in the Pernem Taluka collect only door-to-door dry garbage while the wet garbage goes in the backyards or dumped by the roadside.
The dry garbage that is collected only includes the plastic and paper waste, due to this, the other waste such as the wet waste, tyre, glass, cloths, etc, is being dumped by the roadside or isolated areas, which go unattended. One such village is Dhargal, where the roadside garbage can be witnessed on the road heading towards Shirgal direction from Dhargal junction.

Even though the Arambol, Morjim and Mandrem Panchayats collet door-to-door wet and dry garbage, these villages too face the issue of littering of garbage by the roadside.
Only Arambol, Dhargal, Tuem, Ozarim, Mandrem and Morjim have the permanent materials recovery facility (MRF) sheds while the other 14 panchayats have temporary MRF sheds. While the garbage of Morjim, Mandrem and Arambol Panchayats is dumped at the Saligao Treatment Plant, dry garbage collected by other 17 panchayats is dumped at the MRF sheds.
The collection of only door-to-door garbage has given a free hand for the people to dump their garbage by the roadside or an isolated area, thereby making the area polluted.
“Goa has the waste management corporation but it has hardly managed to clean the State, especially, to the clear the roadside garbage. Each panchayat should collect both dry and wet garbage and each taluka should have an independent garbage treatment plant to treat garbage. Collection of only plastic dry waste is not the solution,” Prabhat Naik, a youth, said.
