PANJIM: The Directorate of Education (DoE) has announced State’s desire to rename 71 government-run high schools and seven higher secondary schools in the name of the martyrs struggled for Goa’s Liberation from the Portuguese rule.

Director Education Shailesh Zingde has issued a memorandum in this regard directing all the high schools and higher secondary schools to initiate action.
The schools are asked to call for a joint meeting of Parent’s Teachers Association (PTAs) and School Management Committees (SMC) and take resolution from members and submit the same to the department on or before November 22.
The DoE has also directed the schools to identify the martyrs in their locality or village or taluka whose name can be given to the respective schools. Here too, resolution of PTAs and SMC is mandatory.
During the 75th Independence Day, the Chief Minister had announced to name all the government schools after martyrs and freedom fighters of Goa’s freedom struggle. The government intends to re-name the schools by December 19, when the State will celebrate its 61st liberation.
The State government had recently honoured 70 freedom fighters, who martyred while liberating Goa.
