GSP has also requested all opponents of Mopa airport, including Goans for Dabolim Only, to unite and “defeat this mega scam and avert the expected ecological disaster at Mopa.”
At a press briefing in the GSP Mapusa office on Thursday, general secretary Floriano Lobo said that the residents of Varkhand, which is the gateway for Mopa, must not yield at any cost and that GSP had been supporting the Mopa Vimantal Pidit Shetkari Samiti’s Sandeep Kambli in his steadfast fight against Mopa airport since the agitation started. On the Navy’s presence at Dabolim airport, Floriano said that the Navy was illegal occupying the civilian airport.
He demanded that the Navy either curtail its activities not related to defence to allow Dabolim to grow as Goa’s sole international airport or move to Karwar’s Sea Bird Base or Belgaum.
“At any cost, GSP shall not allow the Navy to continue operations if its presence impedes the growth of Dabolim airport as the sole international airport of Goa. If the Navy thinks it can digest Dabolim Airport for itself, then it must think ten times over.”
Lobo has made a fervent plea to Goans worldwide to join forces with those fighting the Mopa airport and ensure that Mopa is scrapped to save Goa from a massive ecological disaster and to save Goa’s centrally located civilian airport at Dabolim.
