MAPUSA: The fifty-year-old woman Sunita Verlekar Shirodkar who was rescued after 15 years by the Goa police on Wednesday has been found to be medically fit by the IPHP on Friday. This flies in the face of the claims made by her family members who claimed she was mentally unsound.
Since the woman was locked in a small room for almost 15 years, the doctors at IPHP medically checked her basic senses such as hearing, taste and vision and accordingly found her medically fit.
Sources revealed that her family took advantage of the schemes she was registered under. In 2009, she was registered under the DSSY scheme under which the she was getting Rs 1000 which then increased to Rs 1500 and now to Rs 2000. Sources said she had an account in the Canara Bank, Candolim branch. An employee of the branch used to visit the victim’s house every month and the brother of the victim used to take the victim’s thumb impressing on the withdrawal slip.
