Celebration of folk: Colourful Shigmo parade to enliven Margao town today

MARGAO: The Madgao Shigmotsav Samiti and Goa Tourism Department, in association with Margao Municipal Council, will organise the Shigmotsav Parade on Saturday, March 18.

A grand procession will be organized on the old route, starting from Holy Spirit Church to Margao Municipality from 4 pm onwards.

The procession will begin with the raising of Shriphal at the Holy Spirit Chowk.

In this procession, the women’s troupe from Vasco will perform the Romtamel in traditional dress with drums, tashes, shamels, jhanj and other instruments. Before the start of the Shobhayatra, the annual Shree Satyanarayana Maha Puja is organized at the office of the committee 

and blessings are sought for the success of the festival by offering 

Sur-Rot to Rakhandeva.

Huge cash prizes, worth a total of Rs 10 lakh, are up for grabs this year. Madgao Shigmotsav Samiti is the only committee in Goa to award a first prize of Rs 1,00,000 cash, for the ‘Chitrarath’ category. Also, the second and third prizes for Romtamel are Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000, while in the folk dance category, the first prize will be Rs 50,000. From the imaginative vision of the Samiti, the artwork of the main platform, the replica of the Sri Ram Janmabhoomi entrance of the new temple building in Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Sri Ramchandra, will be a special attraction. Apart from this, special arrangements have been made so that the lovers of Shigmotsav can have a proper view of the procession. This year, government and semi-government individuals who have contributed to society will also be felicitated for their work.

On Sunday, March 19, the festival will conclude with a cultural programme by Siddhant Gadekar Academy at the Municipal Chowk.
