Assolna panchayat, locals successfully close sluice gate at Modlam Tollam Lake

Will help in protecting the water bodies of the village and re-cultivate the fields

MARGAO: In an effort to protect the water bodies of the village and to also re-cultivate the fields, the Assolna panchayat along with the locals, village Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) members and Village Development Committee (VDC) succeeded in closing the sluice gate at Modlam Tollam (lake) at Assolna on Tuesday.

It may be recalled that the locals had earlier raised objections to the manner in which the gate was kept open, as it was leading to drying of the wells in the villages and the lake getting affected.

The Assolna panchayat thereafter had written to the Water Resources Department (WRD), objecting to a proposed well project near the lake as well. Following this, the public also demanded for the protection of the lake.

The WRD recently held an inspection to assess the site. The locals also put forward their demands for taking measures to ensure that the water in the lake is preserved, which they said would ensure the ground water table does not dip and that there is enough water for irrigation.

A prayer session was held at the spot where Fr Romeo Godinho, Assolna Parish Priest, gave his blessings.
