St Rock YC, St Savio SC move into quarters

RAIA: Playing a man-to-man marking game and attacking on the counter, St Savio SC, Calangute, narrowly outplayed Rossman Cruz Nagoa-Verna 2-0 to move into the quarter-finals of Cavelossim Villagers UK Cup organised by Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim at Fr Druston and Wellington ground, Cavelossim, on Tuesday. 

There was no score at lemon break.

On crossing over, St Savio SC’s left winger Saish Palyekar played an outstanding game on the left flank and his powerful shot from a narrow angle entered the Rossman Cruz goal to lead 1-0. 

Within a matter of minutes, St Savio SC were awarded a 40-yard free kick which was again taken by Saish to shoot the ball into the top left corner of the goal to ramp up the match 2-0.

In the quarters, St Savio SC will face Fr Agnelo YC, Paroda.

Earlier, St Rock Youth Club, Majorda, edged past Navelim Sporting 5-3 via tie-breaker to enter into the quarter-finals.

In the 20th minute, hard working left winger Irfan Lal took a curling corner-kick which was headed in by Nihal D’Costa to give St Rock YC an unexpected 1-0 lead.

Crossing over, Navelim Sporting Club mounted a series of raids into the St Rock YC. In the penultimate minute, defender Wellington D’Silva moved upfront, controlled a through ball and fed Prestly Gomes in the goal mouth, who made no mistake to restore parity.

At the end of regulation time, both teams were held to a 1-1 draw.

In the resultant tie-breaker, Lisamber, Josley, Ashley and Irfan scored for St Rock YC, while Nevin Pereira and Kevin Costa failed to score for Navelim Sporting enabling St Rock YC to enter the quarter-finals, where they will clash with Goa Velha SC on November 18.
