OLD GOA: Norman Fernandes, prime accused in the double murder of his sister and her mother-in-law, was arrested by Old Goa police on Saturday afternoon.
Norman was arrested shortly after his discharge from the GMC hospital, where he was being treated for nearly two weeks after sustaining injuries in the incident.
Police sources told Herald that Norman has been sent to police custody at the Ribandar police outpost and will be produced before the Panjim Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) on Sunday for further remand.
Norman has been arrested under sections 302, 307, 452 read with 34 Indian Penal Code (IPC) and police has been interrogating him since Saturday afternoon in connection with the double murder.
It may be recalled that a family dispute over property matters came to a gruesome end on September 2, when Norman was accused of stabbing his sister, Noreen, and her mother-in-law, Aurita Vaz, to death at their residence in Santa Cruz. Noreen’s husband, Edgar, was also injured in the incident.
Since Norman has been placed in police custody at the Ribandar police outpost, police sources said his brother-in-law, Noel Monteiro, who has also been arrested in the case after being accused of accompanying Norman on the fateful night, has been shifted from the Ribandar police lockup to the Panjim police lockup.
Meanwhile, Edgar Vaz and his father, Mathias, were seen at the Old Goa police station on Saturday evening. They, however, declined to speak to the media regarding their presence in the police station.
