PANJIM: Birpratap Sharma (Epee), Kushal Das (Foil) and Abhishek Naik (Sabre) excelled in the men’s section while Sinikka Sapeco (Epee), Sayee Shirodkar (Foil) and Aarti Pail (Sabre) topped the respective events in the women’s section at the State Fencing Championship organised by Goa Fencing Association at Taleigao.

Over 180 fencers took part in the championships, which comprised various age-group categories alongside the seniors competition in all the three events, namely Epee, Foil and Sabre.
Fencing, a highly technical sport played on an electronically-controlled field of play, is drawing an ever-growing response from youngsters in particular and the excitement was evident over the two days of the State championships.
The added motivation came from the fact that the top podium-grabbers will represent Goa at the forthcoming Senior Nationals and will also be the probables for the National Games Goa 2023 to be hosted later this year.
The other medallists in the men’s Epee event are Rohan Bhandari (silver), Deepaksingh Rajput and Rohan Kamble (both bronze). Foil – Arunkumar Saive (silver), Hitarth Mulewa, Aditya Mittal (bronze). Sabre – Om Ghantkar (silver), Dinesh Kamee, Sohil Farooqui (bronze).
In the women’s section, the second and third-placed fencers are: Epee – Tamanna Warlikar (silver), Jennica Braganca, Harshita Marabe (bronze). Foil – Maira Kohli (silver), Sanvi Prabhudesai, Nafisa Bono (bronze). Sabre – Stuthi Sanil (silver), Mahek Shaikh, Riya Kamble (bronze).
