‘Atmanirbharta’ or self-sufficiency is a term that leads the vision for an India that is set to establish our country as a technological hub and the need of the hour is to unlock the complete potential that the optical fibre industry in this country holds so that it can unfurl itself as a manufacturing powerhouse as well.
Besides Artificial Intelligence, data connectivity in the form of the Fifth Generation (5G) networks is the latest ‘gizmo’ towards achievement of a ‘tech-pro’ India. 5G is the next generation wireless technology that promises high data capacity at a blazing speed in the region of a whopping 10 gigabytes (GB) per second, and also possessing the capability to connect multitude of devices concurrently.
According to the latest statement issued by Minister of State (Communication), Devusinh Chauhan, India is optimistically set to witness the emergence of its own indigenously developed and manufactured 5G stack that would roll out 5G networks across the country.
The captivating evolution that has been witnessed across India’s telecom market could also have been incited by the market-friendly policies that have been promoted by the current government at the Centre. That aside, the engineers and experts who have been working day and night on making 5G technology an enviable accomplishment have also automated a set of 5G standards which would further simplify the reach of 5G network across the rural terrains of India.
As more and more people are lured into the Internet universe, the popularity of streaming digital content has skyrocketed too, thanks to which, the spectrum bands utilised by the current 4G networks are getting increasingly congested, thereby causing multiple and frequent server crashes.
What then, are some of the pros and cons of having 5G technology at our disposal? First, let’s survey the advantages –
a) 5G generates much greater speed of data transmission and is expected to be around 100 times faster than the Fourth Generation (4G) networks.
b) 5G implies lower latency which is the time gap between receiving an order and executing the requisite instruction. This would also mean we could view high speed virtual reality videos as well and without any interruptions, so to say.
c) 5G entails heightened rates of connectivity since it uses more spectrums that allow greater number of devices to be connected, thus easing data traffic congestions enabling more devices to communicate simultaneously with one another.
d) 5G network is energy efficient. It aims to mitigate consumption of energy by 10 per cent as compared to 4G networks.
e) 5G would permit enterprises to co-ordinate all devices under their control to immeasurable competence.
On the flip side, here are a few ‘cons’ of 5G technology.
a) Upgrading to 5G network implies replacing existing 4G networks which in turn implies increased cost of establishment by means of time and money.
b) The 5G technology is, more so, in a developing phase where a lot is yet to be discovered which happens to be a major drawback of the same.
c) Getting 5G into the picture would also mean limited coverage as a result of the increase in 5G bandwidth. This would mean 5G technology travelling a shorter distance in comparison to 4G networks, thereby reducing the coverage area of a single 5G tower.
d) 5G does not eliminate the everlasting threat of security and privacy issues. Studies have shown that it could even increase security threats as it would allow high quality data to be transferred across more points of entry to apparent hackers.
All said and done, technology has to unquestionably keep up with the times and hence there is also an imperative need for it to constantly keep upgrading and evolving itself. As long as the benefits of enriched technology outweigh its shortcomings, it’s certainly worth going for it!
