PONDA: The election to the Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) chairperson’s post on Monday (May 21) will be a mere formality as the MGP-backed Rising Ponda Panel candidate Pradeep Naik is all set to be elected unopposed.
Naik is the lone candidate to have filed his nomination for the chairperson’s post while for deputy chairperson’s post Vishwanath Dalvi of BJP-backed Ponda Nagrik Samithi filed his papers.
Addressing media persons here, MGP leader and PWD Minister Ramkrishna (Sudin) Dhavalikar and BJP President Vinay Tendulkar said their alliance will provide a stable council for the next five years and will work for the betterment and development of Ponda.
Dhavalikar said the 12 members of alliance will work for completing the sewerage treatment plant for Ponda and assured that the incomplete Ponda market project will be completed and Indira Market will be developed and renovated.
He also assured to solve the long-pending Ponda market sopo issue and added that the Traffic Management Plan for Ponda with little modifications will be implemented to solve the parking problems and traffic congestion in the town.
Tendulkar said for the sake of development the MGP-BJP alliance was needed in the State.
Of the five elected councillors, three BJP-backed members failed to turn up for the press briefing.
In 15-member council, the MGP-backed panel has seven members, BJP-supported panel has 5 and Congress-backed panel has three.
Though the PWD Minister claimed to have the support of 12 councillors, only 9 were present including two from the BJP-backed panel.
It may be recalled that BJP-backed panel’s two members Venktesh Naik and Chandrakala Naik withdrew support to the MGP-supported panel in forming ruling council. Another BJP-backed member Archana Naik remained absent for press briefing.
