PONDA: With two to three accidents taking place at the Opa-Khandepar Junction every week, villagers have urged the authorities to complete the pending approach road to the new Khandepar Bridge.

The government constructed a four-lane road in the village, along with a four-lane bridge, which was inaugurated in 2018 on the Ponda side, without an approach road, said locals. The construction of the road is still pending, four years later, due to which highway traffic, including heavy vehicles, passes through the internal village roads, at the Opa- Khandepar Junction.
The speeding vehicles proceeding from Ponda towards Belgaum often cause accidents at the junction, as it is on a slope. Each day, around 300 students wait for their buses on the road at the Opa junction, as there is no bus shed, and are at risk of being hit by these heavy vehicles, say locals.
It may be recalled that the approach road work was delayed due to litigation from a landowner whose house was in the way, but the matter has now been settled, and the house in question was removed a year ago.
