PANJIM: The National Fishworkers Forum (NFF) along with three Karnataka traditional fishermen’s associations submitted a memorandum to District Collector, Joint Director of Fisheries and Local MLA of Karwar demanding ban on destructive gears like bull or pair trawling and use of LED lights, with or without generator.

The memorandum stated that the traditional fishermen associations from Morjim to Bhatkal had come on one platform to demand strict action against the Malphe bull trawlers and Goan LED light trawlers as these trawlers from Karnataka and Goa which were depriving nearly two lakh families across 250 kms of coastline, of their livelihood.
Goenchea Raponnkarancho Ekvott General Secretary Olencio Simoes stated that the State government had banned the use of destructive gear such as bull or pair trawling and use of LED lights with or with generator in territorial waters vide letter order dated May 10, 2016 of government notification number 2-1-81-FSH (V) dated September 4, 2001, published in the Official Gazette, Series I No 24, dated September 13, 2001.
The Karnataka fishermen organisation have demanded to implement the ban and take strict action against Miguel Rodrigues (JoeCons) who first advocated such destructive technology which has been banned in most of the world.
