VALPOI: Raising serious concern over the thriving matka business in the market complex in Valpoi town, residents have warned of the negative impact on the youth if such activities were not stopped immediately.
Residents along with social activist Vishwesh Prabhu pointed out that though the government had constructed the market complex to facilitate people, it was being misused by miscreants, who have taken advantage of many shops being closed in the complex.
The new market complex was put to use two years back, but many shops are not opened due to many reasons. However, some shops are openly running the illegal matka business, which is banned by the state government, the activist said.
During noon, many students wait in this complex to proceed to their villages and there is a possibility of students getting attracted to the gambling activity, which can have bad impact on their studies, he said, demanding an immediate clampdown on such activities by the Valpoi Municipal council authorities.
When approached by this correspondent, VMC CO Cynthia Mesquita said the allegations made by social activist would be considered and an enquiry would be conducted soon. If matka-related activity was found taking place there, action will be taken against shop owners, she stressed.
