Calangute Police have arrested notorious fraudster Suraj Pendse for allegedly posing as an official of the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) and cheating restaurant and café owners of ₹9.59 lakh.
According to police, the accused approached several eateries, claiming to be a GSPCB officer and allegedly demanded money on the pretext of conducting inspections and settling supposed violations.
Following complaints from affected owners, Calangute Police registered a case and traced the accused, leading to his arrest.
Pendse was produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Mapusa, and has been remanded to seven days of police custody for further investigation.
Police are probing whether more establishments were targeted and if the accused had accomplices.
