Residents of Mormugao on Tuesday addressed a press conference to express growing alarm over what they described as worsening coal pollution in the region, attributing it to increasing coal handling and transportation activities.
Locals alleged that coal dust levels have risen sharply in recent months, resulting in a surge in respiratory ailments, allergies, and other health-related complications, particularly among children and the elderly. They claimed that fine coal particles are settling inside homes, on streets, and in public spaces, making everyday life increasingly difficult.

Apart from health issues, residents also highlighted serious environmental concerns, stating that unchecked coal operations are degrading air quality and impacting surrounding ecosystems. They warned that continued exposure to coal dust could have long-term consequences for both human health and the environment.
The residents urged authorities to take immediate and decisive action, including the implementation of stricter pollution control measures, continuous air-quality monitoring, and enforcement of existing environmental regulations.
They stressed that unless urgent steps are taken, the situation could worsen further, placing thousands of people at risk. The residents appealed to the government to prioritise public health over commercial interests and ensure that Mormugao remains a safe and livable city.
