Goan-origin Portuguese politician, lawyer and academic Dr Narana Sinai Coissoró died in Lisbon on Saturday at the age of 94. His death was confirmed by Portugal’s CDS–People’s Party, which described him as one of the key figures in the party’s history.
Born in Goa on October 3, 1931, Coissoró studied law at the University of Coimbra before earning a doctorate in political science from the University of London. He went on to work as a lawyer and became a professor emeritus at the Higher Institute of Social and Political Sciences (ISCSP). He was also associated with the Institute of the Orient, where he served as president.

Coissoró was elected to Portugal’s Assembly of the Republic for the first time in June 1976 and served in eight legislatures. He led the CDS parliamentary group for 13 years, from 1978 to 1991, during a crucial period in the party’s development. He later served as vice-president of the Portuguese Parliament from 1999 to 2005.
An author of several works on law and political science, Coissoró maintained a strong connection with Goa and its cultural community in Portugal. He received several national honours, including the Grand Cross of the Order of Public Instruction.
