New Delhi: The southwest monsoon is still active across India, but rainfall this season has been far from evenly distributed, with several parts of the country experiencing prolonged dry spells followed by intense bursts of rain.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier forecast below-normal rainfall for the June-September monsoon season, indicating that the overall rainfall could remain below the seasonal average.

However, the distribution of rainfall has emerged as a key concern. While some areas have received little or no rain for several days, sudden spells of heavy precipitation have resulted in waterlogging and localised flooding in urban centres.
The Delhi-NCR region and Gurugram have witnessed this uneven rainfall pattern. Gurugram, in particular, recorded more than 60 mm of rain in a single day, leading to waterlogging across several areas and disrupting normal movement.
The contrasting pattern of dry spells followed by intense rainfall highlights the uneven nature of this year’s monsoon, even as the season has yet to conclude.
