In a couple of months, the Sanguem Municipality will be shifted to a new building equipped with modern facilities for the staff, councillors, chairperson, vice chairperson and the Chief Officer.
The building constructed in place of the old municipal building at Sanguem is very spacious and will have an open hall on the top floor, independent cabins for the staff members and the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson and the Chief Officer on the first floor. The ground floor will have shops and office spaces which will be allocated to people who had their offices and shops in the old municipal building.
The move to shift in the new premises is welcomed. But the acute shortage of staff at the Municipality has become a matter of concern to the councillors and the chairperson. This has severely affected the functioning of the council. On account of staff shortage, some of the services earlier provided by the council also allegedly stand suspended.
Over the past many years, the council had installed a Television set and radio in the Sanguem garden for the benefit of the general public who would sit in the garden and watch TV. However, the news service stands stopped abruptly over the past many months.
Incidentally some 20 years ago, when late Mr. Minguelinho D’Costa was the Chairperson of Sanguem Municipal Council, the garden was blooming with variety of roses and flowers of different variety and was adorned with a musical fountain. However, down the years, the rose plants and the musical fountains saw a slow death.
The municipality is presently manning its affairs with a lone supervisor who is overburdened as against the allocated strength of three sweepers. One sweeper retired some two years back. However the post of the vacant sweeper continues to remain vacant till date.
