MARGAO: A recent investigation by the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) found that sewage continues to flow into storm water drains from multiple locations in and around Margao. This investigation was initiated following a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) related to the release of untreated sewage into water bodies like the River Sal and Saipem Lake.
Despite prior government inspections in the past two years, the GSPCB’s findings reveal that sewage and wastewater are still contaminating drains near significant landmarks, including the South Goa District Hospital, District Collectorate, Old Market, Khareband region, and Kudchadkar nullah. This practice violates existing regulations.

While the GSPCB officials acknowledge that some sewage and wastewater may come from residential and commercial sources, they believe that once the Main Trunk Line in Fatorda is operational, it will mitigate the discharge of sewage into the nullahs. Additionally, residents of Azad Nagar migrant colony have requested sewage disposal connections to address the issue of wastewater draining into Salpem Lake.
The inspection team emphasises the urgent need for relevant authorities to seal off all discharge points along this route to address the persistent sewage pollution problem. The High Court had previously issued strict directions to the Margao Municipal Council, PWD, and Sewerage Corporation to resolve these issues promptly and stop the discharge of sewage into the nullahs.
