‘Eternal’– A Journey of Creativity is an exhibition by three
Delhi-based artists, namely Swati Joshi
Phatak, Rohit Sharma and Sangeeta Sharma. It opens today, October 16, 2018 at 7
pm, at Carpe Diem Art Gallery, Majorda and will be on till October 20.
While this is Swati’s second show in Goa, Rohit and Sangeeta,
popularly referred to as the artist couple in Delhi, will be displaying their
art at Carpe Diem for the first time.
Swati has an MBA as her academic background, but through
workshops, interactions and dedicated efforts, she has placed her focus on art,
with colour playing a key role no matter what her subject is. Still life,
nature, portraits and symbolic art are some of her preferred choices. In this
exhibition, Swati has chosen the theme of the Chess game and has displayed a
series of works depicting the dynamics of those in power, yet sometimes subdued
by gender or caged by rules of society and more. She has also highlighted human
potential to achieve great feats no matter how small one may appear to be.
Swati’s subjects and characters here become the king, queen, knights, bishops,
rooks and pawns and she has very thought-provokingly pitted the weak against
the stronger, highlighting the potential small pieces like the pawn have in
changing a game as well as capturing the prison that the all powerful king is
really trapped in.
Rohit’s work has evolved over a period of time with deep
influence of his working in the city,as a student at the college of art and
then as an art teacher. His understanding of the nuances of life in the city
are reflected in his keen sense of observation of day to day life, which
unfolds in his work. This series has brought out the obvious understated yet
always visible part, of being in the city – the cows, the vehicles all with
distinct identity and the background of the labyrinthine streets that they
inhabit. This body of work brings us to face the realities of the city, which
are constantly on the move. The donkey is a reflection of what most people in
the city would love to be, that of having a red carpet status laid out to them,
as most inhabitants of the city are no less than stars… even if it is only they
who believe it.
Sangeeta
Sharma has been prolifically exhibiting her artwork in New Delhi, Mumbai and
other major art hubs in India for over a decade now. In this exhibition,
Sangeeta has shared some of her artworks created in bronze, depicting human
forms and figures that speak of the woman, upliftment, delicateness and
confidence all at the same time. Her paintings too focus on the expressions of
the human face and are combined with a unique sense of textures, patterns and
true-to-life details.
