MARGAO: Reacting to the High Court’s order castigating the authorities for their failure to clear the Sonsoddo legacy dump, outgoing MMC Chairperson Ghanashyam Shirodkar said that he had planned to resolve the issue within the next 100 days, but it seems as though a group of councillors and even the Margao MLA are not keen on resolving the long-pending Sonsoddo issue.

The High Court had on Wednesday directed the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) and the Chairperson of the Margao Municipal Council to clear the legacy dump before February 28, 2023. The HC has also said that GWMC and MMC shall be held personally responsible for non-compliance with these directions.

Ghanashyam pointed out that Kamat has been a representative of the Margao constituency for several years, and in the past, a

few companies were allotted the work to address the overflowing dump yard, with the influence of

the MLA.

"A visit to the site has revealed the pathetic situation of garbage management at Sonsoddo.  There is not even a proper place allotted to segregate the waste,” said Ghanashyam, who also said that the payment to the

contractor presently engaged at the site has not been cleared.

Meanwhile, acting Chief Officer Jayant Tari said that he would try to understand the issue. “I have asked the concerned engineers to get the court order copy so that further action is initiated,” said Tari.
