PANJIM: Calangute saw yet another raid within a span of 48 hours, this time for fake currency.

Five tourists from Chandigarh have been taken into custody for possessing and using counterfeit notes across Panjim and Porvorim. A team of Panjim police arrested them from a hotel at Porbo Vaddo where they had checked-in about a week ago.

As per details shared by North Goa SP Utkrisht Prasoon, the five accused – Rajdeep, Gagandeep, Harjeet, Rahul and Anurag – were using the fake currency in parts of the State capital and Porvorim. “They were tracked using technical surveillance and the search led to recovery of different denominations of Rs 100, Rs 200 and Rs 2,000notes. The total amount of fake currency is around Rs 2,96,400,” he said in a media statement.

The accused have been booked under sections 489-A (counterfeiting currency notes or bank notes), 489-B (using as genuine, forged or counterfeit currency notes) and 489-C (possession of forged or counterfeit currency notes) of the Indian Penal Code.

The tourists had arrived in Goa about a week ago with the intention to circulate fake currency across places they would visit during their stay. They had checked into the hotel and were expected to exit the State about three or four days later.

The investigation team is now probing the source of the counterfeit notes, places they have circulated the currency among other details in what could possibly break a bigger chain of crime involved.
