MARGAO: Fearing that  their agricultural land will be taken away by the government citing various reasons if not cultivated, farmers from Nuvem have appealed not to abandon their fields but cultivate them.

After harvesting the fallow land admeasuring nearly two hectares recently, the farming community now plans to bring more such land in Nuvem under cultivation in the coming days.

Speaking to mediapersons, Sylvester C Fernandes, a farmer from Nuvem, thanked all those who helped them in bringing the fallow land under cultivation.

This agricultural land was left abandoned for nearly 40 years due to various reasons, he said.

He said that another farmer informed him that they are happy to witness a good crop after putting in hard efforts.

“With the help of local leaders Everson Vales and Moreno, the land was cleaned. This crop is our natural food. The farmers should not leave the land fallow, but cultivate it, as several modern machineries are available to lessen the hardships," he added.

He said that there are a number of cases wherein agricultural land has been taken away by the government from the farmers for various developmental works and that’s the main reason that land has been abandoned.

Everson Vales said that they were determined in their resolve to cultivate the fallow land.

“We are very happy that our farmers managed to bring the fallow land under cultivation. I appeal to all other farmers to come forward and initiate steps to bring more and more fallow land under cultivation. Rabi crop will be cultivated in other fallow land very shortly,” he said.

He said, “This land was neglected land for the last 40 years, however, now, the micro-economy will be revived. Cultivating agricultural land helps for a good economy and environment.”

The farmers also thanked the Zonal Agricultural Officer (ZAO) Shariff Furtado for offering help.

“Farmers from other areas should take this as an example from their Nuvem counterparts and start cultivating the fallow land,” Vales added.

It may be recalled that a few months ago, the same farming group had pledged to bring the fallow land under cultivation and had initiated the plans to move forward.
