MARGAO: Several social activists have urged the MLAs to take up the burning issues concerning the State in the Assembly session starting from March 27.

Speaking to O Heraldo, Olencio Simoes said that he along with other social activists are hoping that the government will deliberate on the burning issues of the State and come out with a solution.

“It has been witnessed that the authorities are carrying out works of railway double tracking illegally. Water bodies are being filled with mud and enchantment in the private properties resulting in troubles to the locals,” he stated.

He said that there are several other issues including pollution due to coal transportation, destruction to the environment and biodiversity and hoped that all the MLAs take up this in the Assembly keeping in mind to protect the State from destruction.

Cana-Benaulim Village Panchayat Sarpanch Xavier Pereira said that it is high time that all the MLAs and especially from the Salcete Taluka to take up the issue of western bypass on stilts in the Assembly.

“We want not only the local MLA but all other MLAs to demand western bypass on stilts. People fear of flooding if western bypass is not built on stilts at Benaulim,” he stated.

He also stated that the government should also consider the demands of the people who are fighting for a genuine cause for the last few years.

Savio Coutinho expressed high hopes that the issue pertaining to pollution of River Sal will get prominence in the August House.

“We have in the recent past witnessed a lot of heated discussions, as well as oaths taken on the banks of the River Sal, with respect to the pollution. With the Assembly session due, we hope that this issue gets prominence in the August House,” he stated.
