PANJIM: Fulfilling its promise made during the monsoon session of the State Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has directed the Electricity Department to ensure that the Ganesh idol immersion points across the State have proper illumination. He also directed that all the streetlights should be repaired.

The directions were issued during a review meeting with officials from the Electricity Department at the Secretariat on Monday. He directed all the Executive Engineers (EEs) and Assistant Engineers (AEs) to prepare a constituency-wise review of requirements for street lighting and submit the details to the electricity officials concerned in order to process it without any delay.

He added that all conventional lighting and non-conventional street lighting should be fixed as soon as possible so that people are not inconvenienced during the forthcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival. “The engineers should concentrate on providing street lighting around the areas where idols of Ganesh are immersed. The contractor concerned for LED street lighting should be asked for repairs all non-working LED fixtures and engineers should assist them wherever required,” he said.

During the monsoon session of the Legislative Assembly, Power Minister Nilesh Cabral had assured the House that his department will ensure that all the streetlights are operational before Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

He had also announced that government has initiated the process to formulate a streetlight policy for Goa, by which all the streetlights across the State would be centralised and brought within the ambit of the department. The department has already written to all 191 panchayats and 11 municipalities for their suggestion on the policy.
