Margao: As per the statement of the Health Minister, the first patient could be taken into the new COVID hospital at the South Goa District Hospital (SGDH) from today, Saturday.

The authorities have been wishful till Friday evening as the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) had finished all the pending work. GSIDC officials confirmed the same on Friday and added that as far as their work is concerned, they have made ready the spaces for the COVID wards.

It may be recalled that Health Minister Vishwajit Rane had given an assurance that the patient could be taken into the SGDH, which is the new Covid Hospital.

The Medical Superintendent of the SGDH Dr Deepa Corriea also said that they are working towards the order, regarding opening the hospitals for operations on Saturday. When asked to comment further with regard the status of the preparatory works, she added that some doctors from Goa Medical College (GMC), are in-charge and ensuring that the work is completed.

However, according to sources, while the spaces for the COVID wards are ready, the arrangements for staff and other necessary allied-facilities are yet to be provided for.

With the Colva Residency and some other Covid Care center facilities being discontinued, the people are looking up to the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) to ensure there is a facility for treatment.

As the ESI Hospital balances between the admissions and discharge of patients, the doctors too are of the opinion that the actual advantage of the new Covid Hospital will be experienced over a period of time and not immediately.
