PANJIM: In its highest single-day spike, Goa on Thursday recorded 3869 new cases within 24 hours, which has taken the total number of active cases to 29,752. The positivity rate is at an alarming high of 51.46 per cent.

Directorate of Health Services on Thursday also reported 58 deaths, out of which 57 were within 24 hours (May 5- May 6) and one occurred on May 4. The 57 deaths is the highest number of deaths to have been reported in 24 hours. 

The total number of deaths has now crossed the 1500 figure, rising to 1501, with 304 people having died in the last six days and 650 deaths in the last two months.

Of 58 deaths reported by DHS on Thursday, 35 were at Goa Medical College (GMC), 18 at the South Goa District Hospital, 2 at the North Goa District Hospital, 1 at the Dharbandora Primary Care Centre (PHC), 1 at the Margao ESI Hospital and 1 at the Cansaulim PHC.

There were three deaths below the age of 30 – a 27-year-old woman from Tiswadi, a 29-year-old man from Agonda and a 28-year-old man from Jharkhand. There were also 11 people with no co-morbidities who succumbed to the infection.

DHS on Thursday added a new feature to its health bulletin, which is about the number of hospital discharges in a day. DHS reported that there were 192 discharges while there were 291 patients who were hospitalised in the last 24 hours.

On Thursday, 2,905 people were placed under home isolation, while 2,023 people were declared recovered in the last 24 hours, with the recovery rate now at 71.03 per cent. It also reported that 7,518 samples have been tested.

Urban Health Centre (UHC) Margao (2253) continues to have over 2000 active cases. Four other health centres have over 1500 active cases, namely, UHC Panjim (1976), UHC Mapusa (1622), Primary Health Centre (PHC) Candolim (1587) and PHC Ponda (1516), while PHC Porvorim has 1458 cases.
