PANJIM:  Almost over a year after declaring Panjim, the capital city free from open defecation, the Civic body on Thursday issued a work order for the construction of 310 toilets at the cost of Rs 1.61 crore.  The work completion deadline is set as mid-December. 

The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) had on August 6, 2019 declared city as open defecation free (ODF). 

Addressing media persons, Panjim Mayor Uday Madkaikar said that on the occasion of birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the work order and has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sulabh International Social Service Organization to construct 310 individual home toilets in the city. 

These are single-seater, pour-flush water seal latrine with twin leach pits for five users in the jurisdiction of the CCP, he said. 

“Considering the COVID situation, public hygiene and the importance of accessibility to individual toilets, the corporation will be providing 310 private toilets,” Madkaikar said. 

The construction cost of the toilets is around Rs 1,61,91,064. 

“For the speedy completion of the project, the corporation will provide all necessary support to the contractor and ensure that work gets completed within the deadline of mid-December, 2020,” Madkaikar added.
