Congress vows to reconstitute party, bounce back with three MLAs

At a special meeting held with their main workers at the South Goa district Congress office on Monday, party leader Olencio Simoes told reporters that their three remaining MLAs are like Davids, capable of being the voice of the people, to defeat Goliath.

MARGAO/PANJIM: After suffering a major setback due to eight MLAs defecting to the BJP, Congress in Goa has begun to reconstitute the party base and has vowed to bounce back.  

Congress media cell chairman Amarnath Panjikar said that all block Congress committees will be reconstituted soon. He said that post the defection, the party wanted to see how many block presidents and other members would remain with them. He said that the process to hold organisational elections has also started and the election in-charge Mohan Joshi will meet PCC members at the Congress House, Panjim on Tuesday. 

 The remaining three Congress MLAs Carlos Alvares Ferreira, Yuri Alemao and Altone D’Costa said that party president Amit Patkar had informed them before dissolving all the block committees.  “We have no objection. We have full faith in our block president and committee,” they said.

Simoes alleged that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Revolutionary Goans and the TMC were responsible for the recent political circus in Goa, because of whom genuine voters are suffering. Captain Viriato Fernandes added, “We have decided to go across Goa and meet the people to explain the reality. We have even told the workers that they should not feel ashamed of what the eight MLAs have done.”
