Panjim: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Goa Convener Elvis Gomes stepped down from the post stating he would continue to work for the party at the grassroots level in the State.

Gomes announced his resignation from the responsibility at a press conference in the party office on Friday. Senior leader Rahul Mhambrey, who is heading the ongoing campaign of ‘Goans Against Corona’ has been nominated as the interim convener of the party’s state unit till further announcement.

“No one should read between the lines about my decision to step down as Convener of the State. I have taken the decision in the interest of the party as I want to work at the grassroots level,” he said. Gomes has been holding the charge for around 4 years and was even the Chief Ministerial candidate in the past State Legislative Assembly elections.

Goa ‘Prabhari’ Atishi called Gomes an exceptional leader claiming he has been on the forefront of all the issues that were of concern to Goans. “The party is grateful for his leadership. We are confident that Rahul will perform his duties as an interim convener efficiently while we reorganize the teams over the next few months,” she said in a statement issued through party’s Goa unit.

Speaking further, Gomes, a former senior government officer pointed out that the recent decision of the State government to increase the interest on the House Building Loan procured by government servants is leaving many of them without salary. “The moral of the government servants have gone down, many have been waiting for their promotion for years together, but the BJP-led govt has stalled it to allow their own cadre to be placed there,” he added.

Gomes also slammed the govt for capping exorbitant rates for COVID-19 treatment at private hospitals.
