Goa sees highest single-day spike of 170 COVID-19 cases

PANJIM: With 170 persons testing positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, Goa registered the largest single-day spike in cases on a day which also had one death. 

Tulip Diagnostics, the Verna based firm, which has been shut by the South district administration, contributed the highest 56 positive cases on Tuesday. The premises till Monday had 80 cases. 

The virus is slowly spreading in Bardez taluka, which reported 15 cases, including 13 in Mapusa – Karaswada (8) and Xelpem (5) – and one each in Guirim and Colvale. 

Further, ten cases were reported in New Vaddem, Vasco, the port town which has turned into a major hot spot for COVID. There are also nine new cases linked to the containment zone Mangor Hill. 

As per the bulletin issued by Directorate of Health Services (DHS), of the 5,550 samples tested for coronavirus, 170 were found positive while 1,858 turned out negative. The results of 3,522 tests are awaited. 

This is the highest single-day spike in positive cases. The highest prior to this was 136 cases reported on July 8.

The State’s confirmed case tally now stands at 2,753, of which 1,128 are active and 1,607 patients have recovered.

On Tuesday, Goa once again woke up to news of a COVID-related death. A 52-year-old male from Chicalim, Vasco, who was admitted at the ESI COVID hospital with co-morbid conditions, succumbed to the infection. 

This is the 18th death the State has reported since June 24, when Goa recorded its first two COVID deaths. In the last four days, the State has seen nine deaths. 

Meanwhile, 28 persons have been placed under hospital isolation. Around 29 international travellers and 27 domestic travellers are under home quarantine, while another 12 under facility quarantine.
