PANJIM: Former Chief Minister and All India Trinamool Congress Party (AITC) National vice president Luizinho Faleiro is learnt to have refused to contest the upcoming Assembly election from Fatorda constituency since the seat was allotted to him at short notice.

According to TMC sources, Faleiro, who has been maintaining absolute silence, has now conveyed his decision to AITC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and the party’s top brass about his inability to contest from Fatorda as hardly any days remain to kick start the poll campaign.

Faleiro is also believed to have conveyed to the TMC leadership that it was agreed upon from the very beginning that he will not contest the Assembly elections and therefore he was nominated as Rajya Sabha MP so as to play a larger national role.

However, TMC leaders wanted Faleiro to enter the battle in Fatorda and insisted that he should contest the election from the day his candidature was announced on January 18.

Following Faleiro’s decision not to contest, an interesting situation has developed as TMC does not have a candidate to field in Fatorda with only a day (Friday) remaining for filing of nominations.

Faleiro, along with nine others, had joined TMC in September last year and later was nominated to the Upper House of Parliament in November.
