PANJIM: A team of the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), Roorkee on Thursday conducted a salinity study on River Mhadei at various locations in the basin, a month after the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti appointed them on a request of the Goa government.

Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant announced the inspection by the NIH team on twitter thanking the Union Ministry for the same. “I am thankful to the Union Government and more particularly the Minister for Jal Shakti Shri  @gssjodhpur Ji for quick response to our request,” Sawant said in his tweet.

He further said that the NIH team will again conduct such an inspection in the lean season between March and May.

Sawant in March this year, had written to Shekhawat, requesting the Union Jal Shakti Ministry to give the Goa government an opportunity to plead its case against a series of dam projects proposed by the Karnataka government across the Mhadei, an inter-state river which spans across Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra. Karnataka's proposal is currently being examined by the Union Ministry.

In its letter to the Union Ministry in March, Sawant had said that the dams were intended to divert water from the River Mhadei into the depleted basin of River Malaprabha (also in Karnataka). The diversion, Sawant had said, would lead to increased salinity in the Mhadei and also cause ‘ecological devastation’ in the State.
